If you own a duplex, triplex or fourplex in Minneapolis, a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune should have raised some alarms.
The headline didn’t say anything about rent control. After all, as an ordinance it isn’t on the ballot.
But it really is. It’s just in disguise.
The article detailed how all Minneapolis City Council seats are on the ballot this fall. As of now, the majority of the council members align with Mayor Frey. Love him or hate him, he has publicly stated he will veto any rent control ordinance put before him.
If you follow the link put forth in the story, you will see many wards have Democratic Socialists running.
By en large, these candidates support rent control.
If a majority of them win, they have the ability to override any Frey veto.
Think it can’t happen?
That’s what St Paul thought.
I’ve said it before, and I’m going to keep saying it.
If you’ve got below market rent, it’s a good time to get it closer to market rate. And if you’ve got an empty unit, do your best to rent it for close to market rate.
Early voting starts September 22nd.
