I found myself feeling a little conflicted after watching the documentary “A Precarious State” last week.
Produced by former Kare11 reporter Rick Kupchella, the film is billed as taking a look at the challenges facing the city of Minneapolis, what the causes of decline may be and what it w=may take to turn things around.
I think it’s an important film for Minnesotans to watch, and even more so if you are a housing provider in Minneapolis or St Paul
It will cause you to think about not only the challenges facing the state, and also, what we’re going to do about them. These include the state’s loss of population and businesses, declining school performance, taxes, and the enormous impact city government’s can have on public safety and a city’s future.
Many of the causes cited will be familiar to Twin Cities housing providers; especially those involved in the battle against rent contro.
While the purpose of a documentary isn’t to leave the viewer on a high note with a Disneyesque happy ending, in my opinion the film offered little evidence of good things either happening in the city and state, or what those things should be.
