5 Housing Questions to Ask Your Candidate

If you spent the weekend, or the last several months, pouring over candidate information in an effort to learn where they stand on housing and landlord/tenant issues, only to be left without answers, there’s some good news.

You still have time to ask the candidates, or their campaigns, yourself.

You may want to ask:

  1. Would you support legalizing duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes by right in residential zones statewide?
  2. Do you support statewide rent control or rent stabilization, or allowing cities to adopt their own?
  3. How would you balance tenant protections with the costs and risks small landlords carry?
  4. What would you do about property tax increases on 2–4 unit rental properties?
  5. Would you support streamlining rental licensing and inspection requirements for small owners?

Make your questions specific. Don’t ask “Do you support housing?”. They will all say “Yes”.  Be specific. For example, over the summer I asked a candidate for the state legislature, “Would you vote for the Starter Homes Act as written?” and got a very different answer.

Honestly, I don’t think she knew what it was.  I’m sure she does now.

Remember, early voting is open now. You can find your polling place HERE. And if you want to avoid the lines on November 3, you can find early polling locations with this LINK.
